Located east of downtown Columbia, Shandon is a charming older community that is eagerly sought by people who enjoy a Southern neighborhood with character and convenience. The area is said to have been named after one of the original developers (a Mr. Shand) along with Shandon, a district in Cork city, Ireland. Shandon became a residential neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city, in the early 1890’s. Built on a plan of 4-acre city blocks and tree-lined streets, Shandon attracted residents who could ride the streetcar from downtown. Two-story prairie-style homes with their wide open floor plans were popular around the turn of the century and many exist in Shandon today, as well as homes built in the Queen Anne style with Old English elements. In the 1920’s and 30’s, bungalow or cottage homes were in vogue, and there are plenty of them in the Shandon neighborhood. In the 1940’s, Cape Cod cottage styles were being built. This mix of older styles is what gives Shandon its charm. There is much community pride, as evidenced by the existence of the Shandon Neighborhood Council.
